If you are a parent, you have probably said these words to your kids before: “Eat your peas! (or some other vegetable) There are people starving in the world!” While that is true, we don’t always think about the people in the Bemidji area who are struggling to find a warm meal. In a society of super sizing and all-you-can-eat buffets, we often take for granted our full belly of food. Most of us are concerned about not eating too much. Others in our community are worried about finding anything to eat.
Enter the Bemidji Community Soup Kitchen. An organization 100% run by volunteers and hosted at two local churches, Mt. Zion Church and United Methodist Church. The Soup Kitchen offers three free meals each week. Monday and Tuesday meals are at Mt. Zion Church and Thursday’s meal is at the United Methodist Church. Each meal is served from 5 to 6. The Soup Kitchen served 17,700 meals in the past year, some being served for as little as $.25 per meal. Talk about efficient.
The Bemidji Community Soup Kitchen is always in need of volunteers. People are needed to prepare the food, serve it to clients and help clean up. Many organizations, families, youth groups and others volunteer regularly at the Soup Kitchen. What a great way to get youth involved in volunteering!
If you haven’t volunteered at the Bemidji Community Soup Kitchen before, please consider it. Human nature puts images in your mind of the people that you might see there or why people are there. What you will find out is that a majority of the people are just like you. They might be there dealing with a difficult time for a variety of reasons. Reasons that could have the same impact on anyone. The Soup Kitchen served 12,461 clients last year 17,700 meals. That ratio says that most people just need a meal or two to get them through a tough period in their life. Thankfully, we have the Bemidji Community Soup Kitchen to make that happen.
